An American Airlines Airbus A319-100, registration N744P performing flight AA-1719 from Boston,MA to Charlotte,NC (USA), was taxiing for departure when an odour on board prompted the crew to return the aircraft to the gate. One passenger and three crew were taken to a hospital.

The airline reported a probable mechanical issue caused the return to the gate, it remained unclear whether that issue was the actual cause of the odour on board, one passenger and three crew were taken to a hospital for assessment. The aircraft was taken out of service, a replacement aircraft took the remaining passengers and replacement crew to Charlotte.

A replacement A319-100 registration N804AW reached Charlotte with a delay of 3.5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for 5 hours, then returned to service.
