An American Airlines Boeing 757-200, registration N699AN performing flight AA-518 from Miami,FL to Orlando,FL (USA) with 177 people on board, was on final approach to Orlando's runway 18R when the crew received a trailing edge flap disagree indication, reported flight control problems and went around climbing back to 2000 feet, subsequently declared emergency reporting a flaps problem. The crew reported they had the flaps down and expected a normal landing but reconfirmed emergency due to flight control problem. The aircraft positioned for another approach to runway 18R and landed safely at a a higher than normal speed about 11 minutes after aborting the approach.

Maintenance determined a left hand trailing edge flap gearbox had failed stopping the flap extension at about 20 degrees. The gear box was replaced, the aircraft resumed service after about 23 hours on the ground.
