A PenAir Saab 340B, registration N685PA performing flight KS-2925 from Sand Point,AK to Anchorage,AK (USA), was in the initial climb out of Sand Point when the left engine failed prompting the crew to shut the engine down. The aircraft returned to Sand Point for a safe landing.

A passenger reported the engine began to sound strange when the aircraft lined up for departure, the sound became worse after departure as if the engine was backfiring, soon after the engine stopped.
