A United Airbus A319-100, registration N822UA performing flight UA-153 from Chicago O'Hare,IL to Pittsburgh,PA (USA), was climbing through FL380 out of Chicago about 40nm southwest of Detroit,MI (USA) when the aircraft encountered moderate to severe turbulence prompting the crew to descend the aircraft and divert to Detroit. The crew requested medical services to await the aircraft at the gate. The aircraft landed safely on Detroit's runway 22L about 30 minutes later and taxied to the apron. There are no reports of injuries, the aircraft received damage.

The aircraft was unable to continue service and remained on the ground in Detroit for about 21.5 hours.

A replacement A319-100 registration N459UA reached Pittsburgh with a delay of 4:45 hours.

Passengers described the flight as a "wildride", everything in the cabin including stuff in the seat pockets lifted off and even private pilots screamed.

At the time of the occurrence there was thunderstorm front with embedded tornados and microbursts crossing over Ohio and Michigan at the time of the encounter.
