An Air Baltic Boeing 737-300, registration YL-BBO performing flight BT-629 from Riga (Latvia) to Milan Linate (Italy) with 119 passengers and 5 crew, was departing Riga when the left hand engine (CFM56) ingested a bird. The aircraft climbed out, levelled off and returned to Riga for a safe landing about 20 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 737-300 registration YL-BBR reached Milan's Linate Airport with a delay of 90 minutes.

A passenger reported the aircraft was still accelerating on the runway when a bang was heard followed by strange noises and vibrations. The aircraft became airborne and climbed out, after the aircraft levelled off the left hand engine was shut down followed by an announcement by the captain that the aircraft had received a bird strike requiring the shut down of the left hand engine. The aircraft landed safely back and was received by numerous emergency service vehicles.

The incident aircraft was seen in flight again on Aug 3rd 2012.
