A Mount Cook Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A on behalf of Air New Zealand, registration ZK-MVG performing flight NZ-5755 from Christchurch to Dunedin (New Zealand), was descending towards Dunedin when lightning struck the aircraft. The aircraft continued for a safe landing in Dunedin.

The occurrence aircraft was unable to depart for the return flight and remained on the ground for about 39 hours before returning to service.

A passenger reported the lightning struck the wing of the aircraft, there was a flash and loud bang. The crew subsequently announced they had just received a lightning strike.

No Metars or weather data are available. Local newspapers reported the Dunedin area was under the influence of thunderstorms causing between 7 and 12 liters rain per square meter (7 to 12mm), about 50 lightning strikes were recorded, a burst of lightning strikes was recorded around 17:00L when the aircraft was on approach to Dunedin.
