A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-300, registration N632SW performing flight WN-776 from Providence,RI to Orlando,FL (USA) with 145 people on board, was enroute at FL340 about 40nm southwest of Norfolk,VA (USA) when the crew received an aft lavatory smoke indication and was informed about a burning odour on board. The crew indicated to air traffic control that it sounded like they had a fire on board and diverted to Norfolk. On approach the crew advised they would be able to vacate the runway. The aircraft landed safely on runway 05 about 19 minutes after leaving FL340. After landing the crew advised emergency services they had a "fire, ah smoke detector go off in the aft lavatory", there was no visible smoke however there was a burning electrical smell and were ready to taxi to the gate now. Emergency services did not find any trace of fire, smoke or heat.

Norfolk airport reported a lavatory smoke detector went off and a slight electrical burning smell was detected. However, the smoke detector was identified faulty.

A replacement Boeing 737-700 registration N742SW reached Orlando with a delay of 6 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Norfolk and is estimated to position from Norfolk to Chicago Midway,IL (USA) on Sep 6th.
