An Air France Airbus A320-200, registration F-HEPA performing flight AF-7688 from Paris Charles de Gaulle to Montpellier (France) with 160 passengers and 5 crew, was enroute at FL290 about 110nm northwest of Lyon (France) when the crew decided to divert to Lyon reporting a burning smell on board. The aircraft landed safely in Lyon about 20 minutes later. Emergency services found no trace of fire, smoke or heat.

Air France confirmed a burning odour on board of the aircraft prompted the diversion to Lyon as a precaution. The passengers were taken to Montpellier by coach, ground staff paid special attention to seven unaccompanied minors travelling on the flight putting them onto flight AF-5491 from Lyon to Montpellier in the afternoon.
