Cityjet RJ85 over England on May 2nd 2016, loss of communication prompts intercept by fighter aircraft

A Cityjet Avro RJ-85 on behalf of Air France, registration EI-RJC performing flight AF-1558 from Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) to Newcastle,EN (UK), was enroute about to enter British Airspace when the crew did not respond to a number of ATC calls prompting the UK to dispatch two Typhoon fighters to intercept the aircraft. The fighter aircraft accelerated to supersonic speed for the intercept causing sonic booms throughout Yorkshire and lots of emergency calls by residents to authorities. The aircraft continued to Newcastle accompanied by the Typhoons and landed safely in Newcastle.

Newcastle Airport confirmed flight AF-1558 lost communication with ATC resulting in an intercept by two Royal Air Force fighter aircraft.

The airline confirmed that due to a radio communication problem flight AF-1558 operated by Cityjet needed to be accompanied by two fighter aircraft.

Residents reported hearing two or three booms, many did not recognize right away these were sonic booms by the intercepting aircraft.
