An American Airlines Boeing 757-200, registration N609AA performing flight AA-246 from Kona,HI to Los Angeles,CA (USA) with 140 passengers and 7 crew, was enroute at FL380 over the Pacific Ocean about 90 minutes prior to estimated arrival when the crew needed to shut the left hand engine (RB211) down. The aircraft drifted down to FL250 and landed safely on Los Angeles' runway 07L (while runways 24/25 were active) about 90 minutes later.

The airline said the instruments for engine #1 showed abnormal indications prompting the crew to shut the engine down.
