An Azur Air Boeing 757-200, registration VQ-BQA performing flight ZF-7728 from Goa (India) to Moscow Domodedovo (Russia), was in the initial climb out of Goa's runway 26 when the left hand engine emitted bangs and rumbling noises prompting the crew to stop the climb at 5000 feet, burn off fuel and return to Goa for a safe landing on runway 08 about 3:10 hours later.

Passengers reported following the rumbling and banging noises immediately after becoming airborne the crew announced they needed to return to Goa because two passengers had been left behind, their luggage however was still on the aircraft and they were therefore not permitted to continue for safety reasons. After landing back they could observe that the left engine cowling was opened and mechanics were working on the engine, while the passengers were kept on board with stairs attached, passengers were free to walk down the stairs and stretch their legs on the apron. A few hours later the captain announced the aircraft had been repaired and they could now depart, about 20 passengers wanted to disembark however not trusting the repairs, personnel told them they could disembark but their luggage would fly with the aircraft. The passengers decided to remain on board.

A further explanation regarding the two forgotten passengers was provided later indicating the passengers had proceeded to a wrong gate, were picked up by police there and held until the aircraft returned to Goa to pick them up.

About 9 hours after landing back the aircraft departed again and reached Moscow with a delay of 12 hours.
