A passenger reported that shortly after takeoff fairly strong vibrations were felt in the cabin, the crew soon announced that the vibrations were abnormal, cause unclear, they were returning to Washington. Both engines continued to run until after landing, the captain then announced that emergency services had requested the shut down of the left hand engine. Following examination of the engine the aircraft taxied to the gate, where maintenance checked the engine. About 30 minutes after reaching the gate the captain announced that the engine had ingested a bird, the flight needed to be cancelled.
