A Brussels Airlines Airbus A319-100, registration OO-SSV performing flight SN-2906 from Vienna (Austria) to Brussels (Belgium) with 113 passengers and 5 crew, was climbing out of Vienna's runway 29 when the crew stopped the climb at FL070 reporting the failure of the left hand engine (CFM56), shut the engine down and returned to Vienna for a safe landing on runway 16 about 20 minutes after departure.

The flight was cancelled.

A passenger reported the left hand engine emitted a very loud bang, the crew announced the engine needed to be shut down.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Vienna 25 hours after landing back.

The airline confirmed the engine failure accompanied by loud noise. The engine is currently being exchanged.
