A Delta Airlines Airbus A330-200, registration N858NW performing flight DL-281 from Seattle,WA (USA) to Hong Kong (China), departed Seattle's runway 16L. Just after liftoff of the A332 the crew of the subsequent departure reported a bird had been ingested by the right hand engine (PW4168). In the absence of abnormal indications the crew decided to initially continue the climb. A runway inspection revealed debris on the runway temporarily shutting the runway down, arrivals already established on 16L localizer swung over to runway 16R. The crew stopped the climb at 15,000 feet and decided to return to Seattle advising that both engines were running normally. The aircraft burned off fuel at 11,000 feet and landed safely back on runway 16L about one hour after departure.

The flight was postponed to the next day.

The occurrence aircraft was able to depart for flight DL-281A the following day after 17 hours on the ground and is estimated to reach Hong Kong with a delay of 18 hours.

The airline reported the crew performed a precautionary return.
