An Air Asia India Airbus A320-200, registration VT-JRT performing flight I5-768 from Bagdogra to Delhi (India), was cleared to descend to FL340 near Varanasi (India), the flight crew read the instruction back correctly, however, continued the descent below FL340.

An Indigo Airbus A320-200, registration VT-IEW performing flight 6E-398 from Delhi to Bagdogra (India), was enroute at FL330 near Varanasi, the crew received a TCAS traffic advisory.

I5-768 continued the descent to FL320, both aircraft continued to their destinations for safe landings.

India's Accident Investigation Board reported the separation reduced to less than 5nm, rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation.
