A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration N962DL performing flight DL-872 from Madison,WI to Detroit,MI (USA) with 92 people on board, was climbing out of Madison's runway 36 when the crew requested to maintain 5000 feet indicating they might need to return to the airfield, they were possibly having an issue. About two minutes later the crew declared emergency reporting the left hand engine (JT8D) had failed. The aircraft returned to Madison for a safe landing on runway 36 about 15 minutes after departure.

The flight was cancelled.
