An Egyptair Boeing 737-800, registration SU-GEA performing flight MS-851 (dep Dec 24th) from Cairo (Egypt) to Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) with 89 passengers, landed on Addis Ababa's runway 07R at about 03:09L (00:09Z) but touched down hard ahead of the aiming marker (unknown where actual touchdown occurred). The aircraft rolled out without further incident and stopped on the runway about 1000 meters/3300 feet from the runway threshold. No injuries are being reported, the aircraft sustained substantial damage including damage to the nose gear structure, creases on the fuselage, engine fan blade damage and several skin penetrations.

The aircraft is still on the ground in Addis Ababa almost 2 months later and is not estimated to return to service before end of April 2017.

Gossip running within the airline suggests the aircraft may be written off.
