A Jettime Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A, registration OY-JZC performing flight SK-1289 from Copenhagen to Billund (Denmark) with 52 passengers and 4 crew, was enroute about half way into the flight when the first officer began to complain about stomach pain, became pale and developed cold sweat. The captain took control of the aircraft as well as radio communication, called cabin crew to assist the first officer, tie and shirt were loosened, the shoulder harness locked and wet towels provided. The captain informed ATC and requested medical services to meet the aircraft after landing. The aircraft landed safely in Billund, paramedics stabilized the first officer in the ambulance and took him to a hospital.

Denmark's HCL rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation.

On Dec 1st 2016 the HCL released their bulletin concluding the probable cause of the serious incident was:

An appendicitis led to incapacitation of the first officer.

The HCL reported that the flight crew was on their 5th leg of the day. Just prior to departure the first officer (26, CPL, 1800 hours total) had felt some abdominal pain which subsided after a toilet visit. Following departure with the first officer being pilot flying the first officer felt the pain re-occurring, steered the aircraft clear of some weather ahead then handed controls to the captain (46, ATPL, 9700 hours total). After handing the controls over the first officer felt very weak in cold sweat and was unable to continue any further duties. The captain loosened the shoulder harness of the first officer and secured the first officer's seat as far backward as possible in order to avoid the first officer interfering with flight controls and continued the flight to Billund, where medical assistance was ready for the first officer. The first officer was taken to a hospital where a bacterial infection of the appendix was diagnosed, the appendix was surgically removed and the first officer recovered in full.
