A CSA Czech Airlines Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A, registration OK-GFS performing flight OK-520 from Prague (Czech Republic) to Dusseldorf (Germany) with 55 passengers, was enroute at FL200 about 50nm eastnortheast of Frankfurt/Main (Germany) when the crew needed to shut the left hand engine (PW127) down and diverted the aircraft to Frankfurt for a safe landing on runway 07R about 25 minutes later.

The return flight OK-523 was cancelled.

A passenger reported the left hand engine stopped in cruise flight followed by the diversion to Frankfurt. A fellow passenger seated next to the engine reported he heard two bangs about 20 seconds apart and saw a puff of smoke and a streak of flame out of the engine exhaust. Speaking to the captain after landing the captain suggested the engine had suffered a mechanical malfunction in flight.

On Oct 26th 2016 Czech UZPLN reported the left hand engine emitted a bang associated with the increase in engine temperature and drop of engine oil pressure. The crew shut the engine down and declared Mayday subsequently downgrading to PAN. Following inspection of the aircraft by emergency services after landing the emergency was cancelled. The black boxes were downloaded, the investigation is carried out by the operator of the aircraft. The engine was replaced.
