An Azul Linhas Aereas Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A, registration PR-ATE performing flight AD-5176 from Sao Paulo Viracopos,SP (Brazil) to Tres Lagoas,MS (Brazil), was in the initial climb out of Viracapos Airport when strange noises could be heard during gear retraction. The crew continued the flight and levelled off at cruise level 200, but about 35 minutes into the flight decided to return to Viracopos. The aircraft climbed to FL210 for the return and landed safely back at Viracopos Airport about one hour after departure, taxied to the apron, the gear was examined by emergency service at the stand.

Passengers reported there was a loud strange noise while the gear was being retracted, the flight however continued normally. The announcement of problems with the landing gear about 35 minutes later was therefore surprising.

The airline reported a mechanical problem.
