A United Boeing 757-300, registration N75854 performing flight UA-1221 from Honolulu,HI to Los Angeles,CA (USA), was climbing out of Honolulu's runway 08L when the crew stopped the climb at 11,000 feet reporting an unidentified smell on board and requesting emergency services on standby for an overweight landing. The aircraft returned to Honolulu for a safe overweight landing on runway 08L about 20 minutes after departure, indicated normal operation and released emergency vehicles after rollout.

A replacement Boeing 757-300 registration N57855 reached Los Angeles with a delay of 5 hours.
