A Spirit Airlines Airbus A319-100, registration N504NK performing flight NK-409 from Chicago O'Hare,IL to Ft. Lauderdale,FL (USA), departed O'Hare's runway 28C when both inboard and outboard cowling access doors to the right hand engine (V2524) separated from the engine. A passenger alerted cabin crew, who in turn informed the flight crew. The aircraft stopped the climb at 8000 feet and returned to O'Hare for a safe landing on runway 28C about 15 minutes after departure.

The engine cowl parts were recovered from within the airport perimeter.

The airline reported the crew received indication of a possible technical malfunction and returned to Chicago.
