An El Al Boeing 737-800, registration 4X-EKU performing flight LY-407 from Tel Aviv to Elat (Israel) with 100 passengers, had flown a circling approach to Elat's runway 03 and was on final approach at around 22:03L (19:03Z) when the aircraft needed to go around due to another aircraft not vacating the runway quickly enough. The crew subsequently did not join the usual left hand traffic pattern to position for another approach but flew a slow left hand turn towards the west which brought the aircraft in conflict with mountaineous terrain and prompted an EGPWS alert. The crew climbed out to safety but penetrated Egyptian Airspace during the evasive maneouver, positioned for another approach to Elat's runway 03 and landed safely 12 minutes after going around.

Israel's Civil Aviation Authority have opened an investigation into the serious incident.
