A United Boeing 757-200, registration N57111 performing flight UA-2292 from Newark,NJ to Denver,CO (USA) with 182 people on board, was climbing from FL360 through FL370 about 130nm northeast of Chicago,IL (USA) when the crew donned their oxygen masks, declared emergency and initiated a descent. ATC cleared them to initially FL200, the crew, after sorting out communication problems, requested to continue descent to FL100 advising they had the cabin pressure under control now but still needed to descend to FL100 and they needed to divert to Chicago. The aircraft landed safely on Chicago's runway 09C about 35 minutes later.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled, the passenger rebooked onto other flights.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 26 hours before returning to service.
