An American Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N354AA performing flight AA-989 (scheduled dep Dec 18th, actual dep Dec 19th) from Miami,FL (USA) to Montevideo (Uruguay) with 228 people on board, was climbing out of Miami's runway 26L when the crew reported a minor issue and levelled off at 7000 feet. The crew subsequently requested to continue the climb, but before actually continuing the climb requested to maintain 7000 feet. About 20 minutes after departure the crew indicated they would return to Miami and declared emergency due to overweight landing reporting they had a cabin pressurization issue and an equipment cooling failure. The aircraft landed overweight but safely on Miami's runway 27 about 30 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 767-300 registration N377AN reached Montevideo with a delay of 8 hours.
