Vietnam A321 at Ho Chi Minh City on Sep 14th 2018, engine shut down in flight

A Vietnam Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration VN-A339 performing flight VN-580 from Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) to Kaohsiung (Taiwan), was in the initial climb when during gear retraction the crew heard an unusual sound from the left hand side, however, all instruments showed normal values. The crew continued the climb when the crew heard another sound from the left hand side, this time an "ENG 1 STALL" indication occurred. The crew stopped the climb at 6000 feet, reduced the engine (V2533) to idle. Cabin crew advised the engine had emitted a bang and streaks of flame. Subsequently the crew received an "ENG 1 OVER EGT" indication and shut the engine down. The aircraft returned to Ho Chi Minh City for a safe overweight landing.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for about 326 hours until Sep 28th 2018.

On Oct 5th 2018 The Aviation Herald learned that blades were missing from the turbine in addition to blade damage, the engine was replaced.
