A KLM Boeing 777-300, registration PH-BVK performing flight KL-791 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Sao Paulo Guarulhos,SP (Brazil), was cleared for immediate takeoff from runway 24 and was accelerating, when tower instructed KL-598 to go around. KL-598 went around, KL-791 continued takeoff.
Tower subsequently also sent the next arrival into a go around advising that crew, that the reason for the go around was that there possibly was something on the runway.
KL-598 positioned for another approach and landed safely on runway 22 about 16 minutes after the go-around. KL-791 continued to Sao Paulo for a safe landing.
The departure path of runway 24 and departure/go-around path of runway 18C intersect.
The Dutch Onderzoeksraad (Dutch Safety Board DSB) reported they had opened an investigation into an occurrence rated a loss of separation between an aircraft, that was on approach to runway 18C and went around while another aircraft was departing runway 24. The DSB argued: "Because the extensions of both runways intersected, the aircraft came close together."
In the evening Dutch LVNL (ATC Provider) told The Aviation Herald, the Dutch Safety Board is investigating the other go around, see Incident: KLM B737 and Transavia B738 on Mar 29th 2018, late go around on 18C and conflicting takeoff on 24. The LVNL stated: "Landing aircraft are warned about take-offs in progress 24. Consequently, separation norms do not apply. A 'loss of separation' cannot be claimed." (Editorial note: This statement however would also apply to the other occurrence, that landing crew was advised of the departure on runway 24 as well.)
