An Air New Zealand Boeing 767-300, registration ZK-NCI performing flight NZ-9 from Honolulu,HI (USA) to Auckland (New Zealand) with 230 passengers, was on final approach to Auckland's runway 23L when the crew aborted the approach descending through about 1400 feet MSL due to an unsafe gear indication. The aircraft climbed to 5000 feet and entered a hold to troubleshoot the indication. The aircraft landed safely on runway 23L about 30 minutes after aborting the first approach.

The airline confirmed the crew did not receive three greens for the landing gear and thus aborted the approach. It was determined however by visual inspection as well as cross checks via other systems that all gear was down and locked but the indication was faulty.
