At the same time an Emirates Boeing 777-300 registration A6-EBN performing flight EK-59 from Dubai (United Arab Emirates) to Hamburg (Germany), was accelerating for takeoff on runway 12R and had already reached high speed. Tower noticed the runway incursion but because of the high speed of the Boeing 777-300 did not instruct the Boeing 777 to reject takeoff.
Russia's Ministry of Transport reported ground control instructed the A320 to stop immediately and hold position, the aircraft stopped short of the runway edge but completely past the hold short line on taxiway M11. The crew of the Boeing 777 reported after rotation that they had seen the A320 on their left side.
On May 11th 2012 United Arab Emirates' General Civil Aviation Authoriy released their preliminary report stating that the closest lateral distance between the aircraft (nose to wingtip) was approximately 61.615 meters/202.159 feet according to ground radar.
Runways 12L and 12R are controlled by different controllers. The A320 crew had been advised on approach to expect vacating runway 12L via taxiway M9 which was correctly read back. After landing tower instructed the aircraft to vacate runway 12L via taxiway M9 and turn left onto taxiway M, which again was correctly read back.
While the A320 slowed down and vacated runway 12L the other tower controller issued takeoff clearance to Boeing 777 on runway 12R. While the Boeing 777 accelerated for takeoff the A320 entered taxiway M11 (missing the turn onto runway M) and crossed the hold short line at a ground speed of 22 knots when the Boeing was already at high speed, and continued taxiing towards runway 12R, but then stopped about 60 meters past the hold short line. The horizontal separation between the A320's nose and the Boeing 777's left wingtip reduced to about 61 meters according to ground radar data, the Boeing 777 crossed that point at a ground speed of 144 knots.
