The aircraft was on the ground in Goose Bay for about one hour before continuing towards Newark. The aircraft climbed to FL380 and was enroute about 570nm northeast of Boston,MA (USA) still over Canada about 40 minutes into the flight when the aircraft performed an emergency descent to 10,000 feet (average rate of descent 4000 fpm) and diverted to Boston,MA for a safe landing about 110 minutes later.
The aircraft departed Boston again after about 2 hours on the ground, climbed to 10,000 feet and reached Newark about 50 minutes later. The airline's website listed N33132 performing the remainder of the passenger flight, radar data show N33132 on flight UA-121 from Boston to Newark at 10,000 feet maximum altitude.
Passengers reported they were advised before departure the aircraft was a different type than normal and would need to stop at Goose Bay for refueling.
The airline confirmed pressurization issues on board of the aircraft, the passenger oxygen masks were not deployed.
The Canadian TSB reported on Jan 28th that the aircraft was enroute at FL380 from Goose Bay to Newark when the crew heard a loud squeal and the cabin altitude increased reaching a maximum of 10,000 feet, the cabin altitude warning and horn activated. The crew donned their oxygen masks, performed an emergency descent and diverted to Boston. The passenger oxygen masks were not released. Maintenance found the forward overboard exhaust valve stuck in the open position. The valve was replaced.
