An El Al Boeing 747-400, registration 4X-ELB performing flight LY-27 from Tel Aviv (Israel) to Newark,NJ (USA) with 400 people on board, had departed Tel Aviv's runway 26 and was enroute at FL320 about 90nm southeast of Istanbul (Turkey) when the crew was informed that tyre debris identified to belong to a Boeing 747-400 had been found on the departure runway. The crew decided to return to Tel Aviv, descended the aircraft to FL310 for the return and landed safely on Tel Aviv's runway 26 about 3 hours after departure. Emergency services confirmed a damaged tyre, that had lost its tread.

A replacement Boeing 747-400 registration 4X-ELD reached Newark with a delay of 9 hours.
