An American Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N342AN performing flight AA-211 from Manchester,EN (UK) to New York JFK,NY (USA), was climbing through FL300 out of Manchester over the Irish Sea about 50nm east of Dublin (Ireland) when the crew declared emergency due to an engine (CF6) failure. The crew shut the engine down. Dublin Airport prepared for the emergency arrival and sent all arrivals into holds advising them of an inbound emergency. Dublin Center called American 211 several times without success, then was informed the aircraft was diverting to Manchester and released the arriving aircraft from the holds. The Boeing drifted down to FL200, turned around and returned to Manchester for a safe landing on runway 23L about 50 minutes after departure.

The flight was cancelled.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground about 11 hours after landing.

The airline reported a maintenance issue as cause for the return.
