A Westjet Boeing 737-800, registration C-GWSX performing flight WS-2424 from Toronto,ON (Canada) to Cancun (Mexico), was climbing out of Toronto when the crew stopped the climb at about 10,000 feet declaring emergency due to an electrical smell in the cockpit, cabin crew confirmed the smell was also present in the cabin. The aircraft returned to Toronto for a safe landing about 20 minutes after departure.

The Canadian TSB reported the electrical smell was noticed by the flight crew during the takeoff sequence, at 7000 feet MSL cabin crew confirmed the smell was also present in the cabin. Maintenance was unable to trace the original of the smell despite various checks on aircraft systems and returned the aircraft to service.
