Soon after approach reported that they were going to switch runways to 08, the cell - that had caused windshear with 20 knots gain on short final - had passed over the aerodrome, all aircraft already lined up for approach to runway 26R were pulled off the approach and those, who decided not to divert, revectored for runway 08L. Approach also announced that braking action on the runway was now reported poor to very poor, which prompted a good number of crews to abort the approach to Vancouver stating they were unable to land with such poor braking action. However, soon after runway 08R became available following snow clearing, which convinced a number of crews to continue to Vancouver for runway 08R.
Chinese media are reporting citing a passenger, that there was also a suspicion the aircraft might have received a lightning strike.
The airline reported the aircraft diverted to Seattle due to adverse weather in Vancouver. The passengers (including those without visa for the US) were taken to hotels.
The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Seattle about 13 hours after landing. The aircraft was supposed to continue for Vancouver to New York JFK,NY (USA), then perform the return flight.
A passenger waiting for the return flight in New York told The Aviation Herald, that the airline handed out a letter to passengers stating that the aircraft did indeed receive a lightning strike causing the delay on the continuation of flight and thus late arrival in New York. Another aircraft is being dispatched to perform the return flight.
