A Monarch Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration G-OZBR performing flight ZB-744 from London Gatwick,EN (UK) to Funchal (Portugal) with 137 passengers, was on final approach to Funchal's runway 23 when the crew went around from about 1800 feet due to problems with the flaps. The aircraft climbed to 7000 feet and diverted to Porto Santo (Portugal). The aircraft landed safely on Porto Santo's runway 36 at a higher than normal speed about 45 minutes after aborting the approach to Funchal's Madeira Airport.

A replacement Airbus A321-200 registration G-ZBAL was dispatched to Porto Santo the following day, resumed the flight and reached Funchal with a delay of 19 hours. The aircraft however suffered a technical problem in Funchal and is currently still on the ground in Funchal about 12 hours after landing.

The occurrence aircraft was able to position to Funchal about 21 hours after landing and resumed service.
