A United Boeing 767-400, registration N59053 performing flight UA-946 (dep Jan 19th) from Washington Dulles,DC (USA) to Amsterdam (Netherlands) with 82 passengers and 12 crew, was enroute at FL350 over the Atlantic Ocean about 180nm northwest of Shannon (Ireland) when the first officer advised the captain had become unconscious, requested medical services to meet the aircraft in Shannon and initiated a diversion to Shannon, where the aircraft landed safely on runway 06 about 35 minutes after turning towards Shannon. The captain was taken to a local hospital.

The airline confirmed a medical emergency on board of the aircraft.

United cancelled the flight UA-24 from Shannon to Newark,NJ (USA), Boeing 757-200 registration N12116, indicating operational difficulties.

A replacement captain, suggested to be originally assigned to UA-24, boarded UA-946, the aircraft was able to depart for Amsterdam after 3 hours on the ground and reached Amsterdam with a delay of 3:15 hours.
