A LATAM Airbus A321-200, registration PT-MXM performing flight JJ-8030 from Sao Paulo Guarulhos,SP (Brazil) to Montevideo (Uruguay) with 220 people on board, was enroute at FL340 about 45nm northwest of Porto Alegre,RS (Brazil) when the crew received a cargo smoke indication and diverted the aircraft to Porto Alegre for a safe landing on runway 11 about 27 minutes later.

The passengers were taken to hotels.

A replacement Airbus A321-200 registration PT-MXI was dispatched to Porto Alegre and delivered the passengers to Montevideo with a delay of 17 hours.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for 19.5 hours before resuming service.
