A South African Airways Airbus A340-600, registration ZS-SNE performing flight SA-204 from New York JFK,NY (USA) to Johannesburg (South Africa), was climbing out of New York's runway 31L when the crew reported their flaps got stuck at position 1, they might need to return to JFK. The aircraft stopped the climb at 12,000 feet, dumped fuel and returned to JFK for a safe landing on runway 31L at a normal speed two hours after departure.

The aircraft was able to depart again after about 3 hours on the ground and reached Johannesburg with a delay of 5 hours.
