An Austrian Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration OE-LPC performing flight OS-75 from Vienna (Austria) to Shanghai Pudong (China) with 203 passengers and 16 crew, was enroute at 10700 meters (FL351) about 600nm northwest of Shanghai when ATC instructed the aircraft to descend to 8900 meters (FL291). While levelling off the right hand engine (GE90) did not fully spool up to the thrust needed, while the left hand engine continued to operate normally and went above target thrust to compensate for the partial loss of thrust on the right hand engine. The aircraft continued to Shanghai, on approach to Shanghai the right hand engine failed prompting the crew to declare emergency. The aircraft continued for a safe landing on runway 35L.

The problem was identified as a sensor problem, the aircraft was able to depart for the return flight after about 10.5 hours and reached Vienna with a delay of 4.5 hours.

In an internal memo to their staff as well as in communication with Austrianwings the airline claimed the report above was false (without ever contacting The Aviation Herald however) stating to Austrianwings that there had been just a loss of thrust. Confronted with the fact, that the crew DID transmit "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday" and reported an engine failure with Shanghai Approach, while at about 3000 feet positioning for the final approach, the airline had an authorized captain contact Austrianwings. The captain explained that there had been a substantial loss of thrust, about 60% of thrust on the right hand engine, which according to operations manual has to be considered an engine failure, and the crew reacted accordingly. The engine was not shut down.
