An American Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration N185UW performing flight AA-428 from Charlotte,NC to Denver,CO (USA) with 138 passengers and 6 crew, was in the initial climb out of Charlotte's runway 36C when the crew stopped the climb at 6000 feet MSL reporting smoke in the cabin. The aircraft returned to Charlotte for a safe landing on runway 36R about 12 minutes after departure. Following inspection by emergency services the aircraft taxied to the apron.

A replacement A319-100 registration N724UW reached Denver with a delay of 2.5 hours.

The airline reported a mechanical issue as cause for the return.
