A Canadian North Boeing 737-200, registration C-GDPA performing flight 5T-439 from Iqaluit,NU to Rankin Inlet,NU (Canada) with 56 people on board, was enroute at FL320 about 170nm west of Iqaluit when the crew observed the left hand engine's (JT8D) oil quantity had reduced to 1.25 gallons, however, oil temperature and oil pressure remained stable. Some time later the quantity had reduced to 0 and the engine oil low pressure indication began flashing. The crew worked the related checklists, shut the engine down, declared emergency and returned to Iqaluit for a safe landing.

The Canadian TSB reported an oil line at the gearbox was leaking.
