A passenger reported that during departure from Hamburg there was an odour of old socks throughout the cabin for about 10-20 minutes, then dissipated. After the first go around the passenger noticed that the flaps were retracted but the gear remained extended, there was no information provided by the flight deck or cabin crew. While on a long downwind the passengers heard that the gear was retracted and extended a number of times. The aircraft went around a second time, positioned for another approach, commencing the approach much more quickly than after the first approach, and landed safely. The aircraft taxied to the apron, passengers disembarked, the cockpit door remained closed all time, there was no announcement.
