A passenger reported the electrical odour was first noticed in the back of the cabin when the aircraft was about to leave Canadian Airspace and enter US Airspace. The passengers were asked to check their belongings for any hot electronic devices. The search, lasting for about one hour, was without success and could not identify the source of the smell, therefore the crew decided to divert to Nashville. The crew subsequently ran of crew duty time. A replacement Boeing 737 was dispatched to Nashville to pick the passengers up. About 2-3 hours into the wait at Nashville the captain announced that the cause of the odour had been found, a burnt fan motor in the aircraft's air conditioning system.
A replacement Boeing 737-900 registration N77430 was dispatched to Nashville, resumed the flight as UA-2056 and reached Houston with a total delay of 8 hours.
