A Republic Airways Embraer ERJ-175 on behalf of American Airlines, registration N423YX performing flight YX-4378/AA-4378 from Washington National,DC to Memphis,TN (USA), departed runway 01 and was in the climb about 2.5nm from the runway when the left hand engine (CF34) emitted a loud bang and streaks of flame prompting the crew to declare emergency, shut the engine down and return to National Ronald Reagan Airport for a safe landing on runway 01 about 12 minutes after departure. The crew advised after landing, that no further assistance was needed, they suspected a bird had hit the left hand engine.

A replacement Embraer ERJ-175 registration N437YX reached Memphis with a delay of 2 hours.

A ground observer, about 2.5nm from the aerodrome, reported that there was a loud bang from an engine of the aircraft just as it flew past, a continuous high buzz followed (the observer added it sounded like a World War 2 buzz bomb).
