A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N8601C performing flight WN-346 from Phoenix,AZ to San Francisco,CA (USA) with 170 passengers and 6 crew, was descending towards San Francisco when the crew reported smoke in the cockpit and decided to divert to San Jose,CA (USA) for a safe landing on 30L. The crew advised after landing they were able to taxi to the apron but requested emergency services to follow them to the gate.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration N8657B continued the flight for the 9 minutes hop to San Francisco International Airport reaching the destination with a delay of 4.5 hours.

The airline reported there were mechanical difficulties of possible smoke in the cockpit prompting the crew to divert to San Jose even though just about 45nm from San Francisco.

The occurrence aircraft was able to resume service 4 hours after landing.
