A Martinair McDonnell Douglas MD-11 freighter, registration PH-MCP performing flight MP-6741 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Miami,FL (USA), departed Amsterdam's runway 36L and was in the initial climb when the crew advised they had encountered "a lot of birds" upon rotation, engine #1 (PW4462) was vibrating. The aircraft climbed to FL130, dumped fuel and returned to Amsterdam for a safe landing on runway 27 about 55 minutes after departure.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground 11 hours after departure.

A number of seagulls were recovered from the runway.
