A KLM Boeing 747-400, registration PH-BFV performing flight KL-897 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Beijing (China), was enroute about 3 hours prior to estimated arrival when a male apparently confused Chinese passenger locked himself into a toilet and injured himself. The Chinese subsequently entered a galley and attacked one of the first officers on board in the galley using a sharp object (unclear whether broken glass or knife) causing minor injuries to the first officer. Other crew members and passenger overwhelmed the attacker, he was tied to a seat. The captain decided to continue the flight to Beijing where the flight landed without further incident. Chinese police arrested the attacker, the first officer went to hospital and was discharged soon after.

KLM reported that "an emotionally disturbed passenger" injured himself in a toilet, thereafter the same passenger slightly injured a first officer, at that point other crew members and passengers managed to get the person under control. There were four flight crew on board of the aircraft, at no time there were fewer than two flight crew on the flight deck. The injured flight crew member was treated in Beijing, is in good condition and has already returned to the Netherlands.
