A Stobart Air Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A on behalf of Flybe, registration EI-REM performing flight BE-821 from Manchester,EN to Isle of Man (UK) with 66 passengers and 4 crew, landed on Ronaldsway Airport's runway 26, however, the tail contacted the runway surface. The aircraft rolled out without further incident and taxied to the apron.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for 13 hours before resuming service.

The French BEA reported in their weekly bulletin that the aircraft sustained minor damage when it suffered a tail scrape upon landing at Isle of Man's Ronaldsway Aerodrome. The occurrence was rated a serious incident and is being investigated by the AAIB.

On Apr 14th 2016 the AAIB released their bulletin that the first officer, pilot flying under supervision for line training, mishandled the flare causing the tail bumper to contact the runway surface. No maintenance action was necessary as result of the tail scrape.

The AAIB reported that the captain (46, ATPL, 9,332 hours total, 7,741 hours on type) assessed the final approach as stable, the first officer however initiated flare a bit too early resulting in a higher pitch than necessary. The aircraft flew level above the runway before starting to sink again, a light skip occurred just when the main wheels touched down and the captain made steadying control inputs in order to avoid the first officer producing large control inputs which could have resulted in another now nose gear first touch down.

An observer near the runway observed sparks from the tail of the aircraft and alerted ATC, who in turn informed the crew. An examination revealed a light abrasion of the tail bumper, however within permitted limits so that no maintenance action was needed.
