The airline reported a herd of boars strayed onto the runway, the captain attempted to apply emergency brakes, the aircraft went left off the runway. There were no injuries, the damage is being assessed.
The airport remained closed the rest of Dec 4th as well as all day Dec 5th, investigators of India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation are expected to arrive on site before the aircraft can be moved.
The airport reported a first inspection showed there was no breach in the airport's perimeter fence.
No Metars are available, the local weather station reported calm winds and visibility of 4000 meters.
Adult Indian Boar reach up to 90-136kg/200-300lbs of mass and up to 36 inches/91cm shoulder height.
On Oct 24th 2017 India's DGCA released their final report concluding the probable cause of the accident was:
The aircraft during its landing roll had a wild life (Wild Boars) strike on the runway, resulting in collapse of left main landing gear and subsequently the aircraft veered to the left of the runway.
Contributory factor
The presence of wild life in the operational area and the runway was due to several breaches in the boundary wall.
The DGCA reported the flight was uneventful until after touchdown 595 meters past the runway threshold, when 5 seconds and 254 meters after touchdown the aircraft collided with wild boards causing the left main gear to collapse and the aircraft to veer left off the runway. The crew stated they had not seen the animals while on final approach and spotted them only after touch down, however, had no time to react. The nose gear collapsed as well while the aircraft was skidding off the runway.
The aircraft sustained substantial damage including collapsed nose gear, collapsed left main gear, sheared off propeller blades left engine, left inboard flap fairing sheared off, left wing tip fractured, left aileron bent and fractured, left wing spar cracked and bent, nose fuselage damaged and compartment floor broken. In addition 4 runway lights were damaged.
The captain (48, ATPL, 7,748 hours total, 2,148 hours on type) was assisted by a first officer (55, ATPL, 7,804 hours total, 137 hours on type).
The DGCA reported about 20 breaches were found in the airport's perimeter wall including an 18 inch pipe and several 18 by 18 inch square openings adequate for wild life to enter the aerodrome at any time of the day.
No perimeter road was available along the perimeter wall, any side. Dense vegetation and tall grass (up to 12 feet) was observed throughout the aerodrome partially overgrowing the perimeter wall.
