A United Boeing 737-900, registration N62889 performing flight UA-1048 from Newark,NJ (USA) to Cancun (Mexico) with 185 people on board, was climbing through about FL180 out of Newark when the crew donned their oxygen masks reporting smoke in the cockpit and returned the aircraft to Newark. The aircraft landed safely back on Newark's runway 22L about 30 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 737-900 registration N67845 reached Cancun with a delay of 2.5 hours.
